Nicaragua Missionary Trip 2004

The Nicaragua mission team left from the Raleigh-Durham airport on June 5, 2004 and traveled to the capital city of Managua. The team, organized by Dana Eddings, consisted of 2 doctors, three ministers, a veterinarian, several local business people, some retired members, and five students. The goal was to provide ministry and distribute medications, vitamins, and worm medicines to as many people as possible that were unable to afford medical care.  Over $10,000 in drugs were purchased and donated for the trip. Dr. Liz Cook organized and arranged for the packaging of the medicines.  Four churches sent representatives including, First United Methodist, St. Peter’s Episcopal, First Christian Churches of Washington, NC and also First Christian Church of Greenville, NC.  Missionaries Mike and April Havlin, of Nicaragua met the group at the airport in Managua. They are missionaries sponsored by Harvest Church, Washington NC.

On Sunday, June 6, 2004 the group attended the Iglesia Maranatha de Villa de la Reconciliacion church where Mike and April provide their Central American ministry. Team members worshiped with approximately 80-100 members of the church and noted that worship in this small open church was not unlike worship in their home churches.  Tom Banks delivered the sermon in English as Mike Havlin translated in Spanish.  Several of the mission team members spoke and offered testimonials.

After lunch, the team returned to the church and participated in the children’s ministry provided by April Havlin. Team members conducted a drama about the Good Samaritan and helped with songs, games, and scripture reading.  Approximately 300 children attended the children’s worship service.

The team also attended a Tuesday night worship service in Loma Verde at a church called Iglesia Renovacion.  Abraham Salguera, the minister of the church, worked with the mission team throughout the week to provide medical assistance.

On Monday through Thursday of the week, the team worked in churches and a school to provide the medical treatment and dentistry services to the communities. Along with the two doctors traveling with the team, the team hired two additional Nicaraguan doctors and a dentist.  Approximately 1700 people were treated and statistics for the week are as follows:
Day Patients Treated Teeth Extracted
Monday 365 67
Tuesday 408 95
Wednesday 608 136
Thursday 287 43
