The youth team from First Christian Church in Washington, NC performed mission work in Martin, Kentucky from June 13-19, 2004. The team participated in FAST (Faith Advocates Serving Together) rehabbing homes in Appalachia.  Christian Church-Disciples of Christ, and United Church of Christ and Commission on Religion in Appalachia sponsor the FAST program.

The team joined another team from Central Christian Church in Nashville, Tennessee. Both teams stayed in the gym of the old Martin High School that is now being used as an alternative school.

The two groups worked together to prepare meals, clean up, and prepare sandwiched for lunch at the work sites.  They also participated in worship and Economic Justice training with our group.  Three of their members went White Water Rafting with us on Wednesday.

The First Christian group accomplished a great deal of work.  On Monday, part of the group went to the Jessica Newsome site to complete a punch list.  The rest of the group finished the floor joists, collected rocks to put on top of the drainpipe and covered it with soil.  The entire group worked together for the rest of the week.  Tuesday, they completed the sub-floor in the morning and because it rained the group enjoyed bowling during the afternoon.  On Wednesday the group went to West Virginia to do Adventure Class White Water Rafting.  Thursday and Friday the group completed and raised all four outside walls complete with window and door headers and OSB.  The group took a short break on Thursday to attend the open house ceremony for the Jessica Newsome house they had created the punch list for on Monday.  This gave the group a chance to see the finished produce. The floor plan was the same as the framing work site.

The group had an opportunity to meet the homeowners for both houses.  The house that was dedicated on Thursday was built for young woman who was born deaf.  The house the group was building was for a man who was mentally challenged.  Pictures of what he was living in before it was bulldozed were available for the group to view.

The group would like to thank Barbara Alligood of Nameplates (Pamlico Screen) for donating the mission trip t-shirts.  The donation saved the group $147.13.  Adults traveling and organizing the trip were Karen Keech, Michael, and Jane Alligood.

The group creates a punch list helps complete the Jessica Newsom house.  The four walls will eventually be identical to this house.
