Honduras Missionary Trip 2003

A team of 15 people embarked on a missionary trip to Honduras on June 21, 2003. The trip was organized through First Christian Church and First Methodist Church under the leadership of Ray Moore and Dana Eddings. This was the 7th missionary trip to Honduras organized through First Christian Church. The team joined Lindsay Moore, CCD volunteer and Washington, NC youth, who was currently doing summer intern missionary work in Honduras. The construction and medical team consisted of a doctor, two nurses, a veterinarian, two teachers, several local business people, a number of retired gentlemen, a housewife, and four students including Lindsay Moore. The objective of the trip was to distribute vitamins and mebendizol worm medicine, attend to the medical needs of the community, and work on housing construction in El Porvenir Honduras.  Many people in the mountainous villages live in temporary structures and poor quality housing since Hurricane Mitch destroyed much of the country in 1998.

Front Row: Dr. Richard Young, Sam Fulmer, Dwain Perry, Ray Moore, Harry Tubaugh, Ross Boyer, Dana Eddings Back Row: Judy Blitch, Barry Blitch, Sarah Young, Nila Wehrenburg, Lenora Perry, Doogie Mason, Janice Rich, Laura Dixon, Lindsay Moore.

The team arrived in Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras, and stayed at Monte Carmelo the first night. They met and discussed objectives with Naomi Espinosa from CCD. On Monday, the team traveled north toward San Pedro Sula. The group transferred supplies and medicines to land cruisers for the final segment of the trip. They traveled through harsh mountain roads and crossed a riverbed before arriving at El Porvenir.

On Tuesday, under the leadership of Dr. Richard Young, the team worked to categorize and label the medications. Dr. Liz Cook, local emergency room physician, worked with local drug representatives prior to the trip to obtain, organize, print labels, and direct the purchases and donations of one of the best medical mission organized through First Christian Church. Dr. Cook’s contributions were very much appreciated and assisted greatly in completing the medical team objectives. Over 1000 people from the El Porvenir community and surrounding areas were treated during the week. Many people traveled several hours one way by foot to the medical clinic set up in the two-room school. Malnutrition and intestinal parasites were the most often treated medical problem although many infections were also treated.

The construction team worked each day to complete roofing, pour cement floors, and complete general construction duties. Working with the local community, several homes were almost completed during the week. Several of the team members worked on the rugged road leading to the village.  It was almost impassable due to the extensive amount of recent rain. The volunteers waded in waist deep river water to retrieve rocks for the critical road areas.

During the week, several team members organized special times with the children. Ms. Judy Blitch and several others performed a puppet show entitled "The Very Hungry Catapillar." Sam Fulmer, Dwain Perry, Lindsay Moore, Judy Blitch and Lenora Perry helped the children blow group bubbles.

Each night the group met for devotions and group time. Sam Fulmer led the devotional time with scripture and stories relating to helping others. Doogie Mason played the guitar and led the team in various spiritual songs each night. Team members shared stories and experiences for the day’s events. Since many of the group members worked in different areas, this sharing time became the most enjoyable part of the trip.

Before leaving the village, the group presented a gift of Bibles signed by each team member.  They were written in both English and Spanish.

In working with the "Sow Seeds to Fight Hunger" program, the group also presented large boxes of various types of donated vegetable seeds. The program intent is to teach farming to local villages in order to promote health and nutrition.
