Honduras Missionary Trip 2002

On Friday, July 12, 2002 a team of 13 people left First Christian Church and First Methodist Church to distribute vitamins, worm medicine, and work on housing construction in Tablones Arriba, Honduras.  Many people in the mountainous villages have been homeless since Hurricane Mitch devastated the country in 1999.  This trip was the 6th missionary trip of this kind organized through First Christian Church.

Honduras Mission Team

After some problems in flight destinations and an extra night layover in Miami, the team finally arrived in Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras, and traveled to Monte Carmelo to spend the night and meet with representatives from CCD. On Monday, the team traveled through rugged mountain roads and finally arrived with tools and medications at the working destination of Tablones Arriba.

On Monday afternoon, under the leadership of David Cook, the team worked to categorize and label the medications. The group organized the school where they would be staying for the week and intermingled with the people.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday construction continued on the three partially completed houses.  Vitamins and worm medicines were also distributed through the schools.  During the week, school supplies, toys, and soccer balls were distributed to the two schools.  The soccer balls  and pumps were purchased and distributed by Josh and Dana Eddings.  On Thursday, the younger members of the team challenged a group of youngsters to a soccer game.

The highlight of the week was a combined worship service on Wednesday.  The service was conducted in two languages and songs were sung together combining the two cultures.  Tim Boyer led the music for the service with his expert guitar skills.
